Story, Rhyme, & Song

Please note that this class has changed its day and time from the Spring 2021 schedule.

DESCRIPTION
For ages 3-6, and capped at 8 students, this course offers a traditional foundation in early education as Kay Pelham teaches nursery rhymes (including Mother Goose), stories (including Aesop’s Fables), and various simple folk songs. For many generations, this material was one of the bases of our shared American culture but now it’s rarer and rarer to find families that still know and recite this material. “Miss Kay” will most likely keep their attention for this 45-minute class, but parents are encouraged to stay nearby in the back of the classroom in case their students get restless. Students will remove their shoes as they enter the Great Room, and we’ll have a padded seating area on the floor, making for a cozy gathering.

These works are more than mere tradition. They are the building blocks of language and conversation, and of learning how the world works. And it doesn’t stop there. The nursery rhymes, for example, are the foundation of musical rhythms to be studied formally in later years. And the fables tell stories of friends and enemies, diligence and negligence, and wisdom and foolishness. In addition to being exposed to all this rich material, this class is also an excellent introduction to learning how to operate successfully in a group setting.
